God is good.
Three simple words. Yet they contain a truth so deep that a lifetime is not enough to fully explore it.
Christians say these words in worship. We teach them to children. We repeat them in prayer. We cling to them in times of joy. And sometimes, especially in times of sorrow, we struggle to believe them at all.
What does it really mean to say that God is good?
Is God good only when life is going well? Is God good when prayers go unanswered? Is God good when tragedy strikes? And how can we know that God’s goodness is more than wishful thinking?
The Bible answers these questions with a resounding affirmation: God is good—not occasionally, not conditionally, but always.
What Does It Mean That God Is Good?
When we describe a person as good, we usually mean that they are kind, honest, generous, or trustworthy.
When the Bible says God is good, it means all of those things and more.
God’s goodness is not merely something God possesses. Goodness is part of God’s very nature. God does not become good on certain days and less good on others. God’s character is steadfast, reliable, and unchanging.
The psalmist declares:
“Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8)
God’s goodness is revealed in creation, providence, mercy, justice, forgiveness, and love. Every gift we enjoy ultimately flows from the goodness of God.
Key Bible Verses About God’s Goodness
Psalm 100:5
“For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”
God’s goodness is connected to God’s enduring love and faithfulness. The goodness of God is not temporary or dependent upon circumstances.
Psalm 145:9
“The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.”
God’s goodness extends beyond a select few. It reaches throughout creation.
Nahum 1:7
“The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble.”
Notice that the prophet does not say God prevents every trouble. Instead, God is our refuge within trouble.
James 1:17
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.”
Every blessing, every act of grace, every glimpse of beauty reflects the goodness of God.
Romans 8:28
“In all things God works for the good of those who love him.”
This verse does not say all things are good. Some things are undeniably tragic. Rather, God is at work bringing redemption even from life’s brokenness.
Is God Good When Life Is Hard?
This may be the most important question of all.
It is relatively easy to affirm God’s goodness when life is comfortable. The challenge comes when we face illness, grief, disappointment, injustice, or loss.
The Bible never ignores suffering. In fact, many of its greatest heroes wrestled with it.
- Job lost everything.
- David cried out in despair.
- Jeremiah lamented the destruction of his people.
- Paul endured imprisonment and persecution.
- Jesus himself suffered on the cross.
None of them concluded that suffering meant God had ceased to be good.
Instead, they discovered that God’s goodness often becomes most visible in the midst of hardship.
God’s goodness does not mean we avoid pain. It means pain never has the final word.
Jesus: The Ultimate Proof That God Is Good
If someone asks, “How do I know God is good?” the Christian answer is simple:
Look at Jesus.
Jesus healed the sick.
Jesus welcomed outcasts.
Jesus forgave sinners.
Jesus fed the hungry.
Jesus comforted the grieving.
Jesus laid down his life for the world.
In Jesus, we see the character of God revealed in human form.
The cross is perhaps the greatest paradox of all. What appeared to be humanity’s darkest moment became the means of salvation. Even there, God was at work bringing life from death.
God’s goodness is not proven by the absence of suffering but by God’s willingness to enter into suffering and redeem it.
How God’s Goodness Changes Our Lives
Believing that God is good is not merely a theological statement. It transforms how we live.
We Learn to Trust
When we believe God is good, we can trust God even when we do not understand everything that is happening.
Faith is not having all the answers. Faith is trusting the character of the One who does.
We Become More Grateful
A conviction that God is good opens our eyes to everyday blessings:
- Family and friends
- Beauty in creation
- Moments of laughter
- Opportunities to serve
- Daily bread
Gratitude becomes a natural response to God’s goodness.
We Extend Goodness to Others
Here’s a true video story about the power of kindness to others.
The goodness of God is meant to flow through us.
When we forgive, encourage, serve, and love, we become instruments of God’s goodness in the world.
Common Questions About God’s Goodness
If God Is Good, Why Does Evil Exist?
The Bible teaches that God created a good world but gave humanity freedom. Much suffering results from human choices, sin, and the brokenness of creation.
While Scripture does not answer every question about evil, it consistently points toward God’s commitment to redeem and restore.
Does God’s Goodness Mean Everything Happens for a Reason?
Not necessarily in the simplistic way people often mean it.
The Bible does not teach that every tragedy is directly caused by God. It does teach that God is able to bring healing, redemption, and purpose even from painful circumstances.
Can I Trust God When I Doubt?
Absolutely.
Many biblical figures experienced doubt, fear, and confusion. Faith is not the absence of questions. It is the decision to keep turning toward God amid those questions.
A Daily Practice: Remembering God’s Goodness
One practical way to strengthen faith is to end each day by asking:
“Where did I see God’s goodness today?”
Sometimes the answer is dramatic.
More often it is found in small things:
- A kind word
- A needed phone call
- A beautiful sunset
- Strength for another day
- A reminder that we are not alone
The more we notice God’s goodness, the more we learn to trust it.
God Is Good—Always
The confession “God is good” is not naïve optimism. It is not denial. It is not a promise that life will always be easy.
It is a declaration rooted in Scripture, confirmed in Christ, and tested through generations of faithful believers.
When life is joyful, God is good.
When life is difficult, God is good.
When answers come, God is good.
When questions remain, God is good.
The Christian story begins and ends with this conviction: the God who created us, redeems us, and sustains us is a God whose goodness never fails.
As the psalmist reminds us:
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” (Psalm 23:6)
And that is good news indeed.
